âWe missed the train,â sighed One Eye as they reached the ticket office for the funicular.
âWe have no option but to wait,â said Hallvor. âIt will be faster than hiking up there.â
âWe canât just stand around here waiting for a little train to come along,â exclaimed Damon. âAnything could have happened to them in that time.â
âPlease, calm yourself,â said One Eye. âThereâs nothing else we can do, unless you can grow wings and fly?â
âWe could use your chariot and flying goats, Thor,â smiled Hallvor.
Damon grunted and folded his arms across his chest.
âIâll get the tickets so weâre prepared for when the train gets here,â said Ran before disappearing inside the station.
One Eye took out his phone and called Raven but the call refused to connect. He tried Luke and Saskiaâs phones too but the result was the same.
âNo signal,â he said.
One Eyeâs calm didnât fool Hallvor, he could see the anxiety shining out of his single eye and the tightness in his jaw. He was worried sick but at least he had himself under control.
It was a tortuous wait for the train during which One Eye tried to call Raven, Luke and Saskia several times, cycling between the three numbers but the calls always refused to connect.
âFinally,â huffed Damon when the red train reappeared at the bottom of the mountain.
The four of them hopped on, Damon tutting with impatience at the driver, who stared back at him blankly.
One Eye anxiously scanned the train for his family members but it was empty. The only ones embarking were themselves and three other people.
âCanât you put your foot down?â Damon yelled at the driver when the train felt to crawl at a snailâs pace up the hill.
âNo,â was his curt reply.
âFor fuckâs sake,â muttered Damon, throwing himself back in his seat. âWeâre being overtaken by slugs.â
âJust try and contain yourself, boy,â said One Eye while Hallvor chuckled. âItâs only an eight minute journey at the most.â
âNot with him driving it wonât be,â muttered Damon, gesturing at the driver. âThe way heâs going itâll be night-time before we get there.â
The driver, who had overheard his remarks, started to cheerfully whistle to himself, causing Damon to grind his teeth together.
âDistract yourself from your worries with the view,â said One Eye, peering out of the window.
âIâve seen it before.â
One Eye sighed and, deciding to take his own advice, gazed out of the window but he failed to take in the magnificent scenery. He was too busy being eaten up by worry for Raven and the others. Particularly his daughter. She was the most vulnerable as she was still hurting from Aidanâs betrayal.
âItâs possible Aidanâs up here,â he told the others. âSo we must be ready to fight more people than weâve anticipated.â
âDonât you worry about him,â glowered Damon. âIâll sort him out.â
âI know how keen you are for revenge but you have to bear in mind how Ravenâs feelings may change towards the person who kills her husband.â One Eye lowered his voice to such a whisper his companions could only just hear him.
