‘We missed the train,’ sighed One Eye as they reached the ticket office for the funicular.

‘We have no option but to wait,’ said Hallvor. ‘It will be faster than hiking up there.’

‘We can’t just stand around here waiting for a little train to come along,’ exclaimed Damon. ‘Anything could have happened to them in that time.’

‘Please, calm yourself,’ said One Eye. ‘There’s nothing else we can do, unless you can grow wings and fly?’

‘We could use your chariot and flying goats, Thor,’ smiled Hallvor.

Damon grunted and folded his arms across his chest.

‘I’ll get the tickets so we’re prepared for when the train gets here,’ said Ran before disappearing inside the station.

One Eye took out his phone and called Raven but the call refused to connect. He tried Luke and Saskia’s phones too but the result was the same.

‘No signal,’ he said.

One Eye’s calm didn’t fool Hallvor, he could see the anxiety shining out of his single eye and the tightness in his jaw. He was worried sick but at least he had himself under control.

It was a tortuous wait for the train during which One Eye tried to call Raven, Luke and Saskia several times, cycling between the three numbers but the calls always refused to connect.

‘Finally,’ huffed Damon when the red train reappeared at the bottom of the mountain.

The four of them hopped on, Damon tutting with impatience at the driver, who stared back at him blankly.

One Eye anxiously scanned the train for his family members but it was empty. The only ones embarking were themselves and three other people.

‘Can’t you put your foot down?’ Damon yelled at the driver when the train felt to crawl at a snail’s pace up the hill.

‘No,’ was his curt reply.

‘For fuck’s sake,’ muttered Damon, throwing himself back in his seat. ‘We’re being overtaken by slugs.’

‘Just try and contain yourself, boy,’ said One Eye while Hallvor chuckled. ‘It’s only an eight minute journey at the most.’

‘Not with him driving it won’t be,’ muttered Damon, gesturing at the driver. ‘The way he’s going it’ll be night-time before we get there.’

The driver, who had overheard his remarks, started to cheerfully whistle to himself, causing Damon to grind his teeth together.

‘Distract yourself from your worries with the view,’ said One Eye, peering out of the window.

‘I’ve seen it before.’

One Eye sighed and, deciding to take his own advice, gazed out of the window but he failed to take in the magnificent scenery. He was too busy being eaten up by worry for Raven and the others. Particularly his daughter. She was the most vulnerable as she was still hurting from Aidan’s betrayal.

‘It’s possible Aidan’s up here,’ he told the others. ‘So we must be ready to fight more people than we’ve anticipated.’

‘Don’t you worry about him,’ glowered Damon. ‘I’ll sort him out.’

‘I know how keen you are for revenge but you have to bear in mind how Raven’s feelings may change towards the person who kills her husband.’ One Eye lowered his voice to such a whisper his companions could only just hear him.
